Entry #9 What ARE We Putting into Our Bodies?

Welcome back! Today I wanted to focus on the topic of food and how, as a society, we are allowing it to blindly negatively affect our bodies. Crazy right?
The image above is a perfection depiction of the way our society is currently conditioned to live and think. It is a picture of a man who is supposed to resemble the "food industry" as a whole offering more salt to a grave stone. I think the purpose of this picture is to show our society what we look like from an outside perspective. In other words, it is definitely fair to suggest that different parts of the world as significantly healthier and more self-aware of the food they consume compared to our society. Furthermore, this simple picture brings awareness to how we are unintentionally presenting ourselves to the rest of the world. I felt that this picture was important to share with the class when discussing food because it is the sad reality that our world has come to. People are just simply not aware and too lazy to read into what they are fueling their bodies with each day. Influences such as the convenience of fast food as well as the fact that food is typically the focus of all celebrations and holidays are the reason our society has made this shift. This picture is relevant to other topics in class such as the films Fresh and Food Inc because the purpose is also to both shock and educate the audience on a growing issue within our society. I also felt that this picture was interesting enough to share with the class because it solicits a forced self-analysis. In other words, this picture immediately forces the audience to reflect on their own eating habits to see whether or not they are a victim of this scenario. It is important for individuals everywhere, not just in our class, to be self-aware and search for potential ways to become healthier. As the picture mentioned, "100,00 American deaths annually from excess sodium". This fact should serve as a wake-up-call for everyone in modern society! Let's be better and live healthier!

  1. This picture creates an interesting picture in my head and makes me think of someone just dumping a whole salt shaker on top of my plate of food. It is relevant but also sad how true this picture is. Pretty much everything that is consumed into our bodies has additional sodium in it which can cause many health risks. So you have to pay attention to the food labels. Instead of being lazy we should all take the time to cook meals and maintain a healthy body while doing so.

  2. The picture is very interesting and speaks for itself. I am guilty in the past of putting salt on pretty much everything including some fruit. As I got older and realized it can kill me, I stopped. I am also guilty of not always reading what I am consuming in my body.
