Entry #7 Fresh!
After watching "Fresh" I am with a rather interesting taste in my mouth. I am left with many questions regarding the food industry, the corporate world, and what I truly am putting into my body each meal. These thoughts have consumed my mind along with questions that do not seem to have answers to. However, this movie has definitely inspired me to dive into the world of food and find answers to those questions! I feel that the purpose of this film is to not only bring awareness to the problems and consequences associated with the food industry, but also shed a light on the pioneers of change in the food industry such as Joel Salatin and Diana Endicott. The audience has been narrowed down to consumers in America. The tone impacted me as a viewer because it contains a lot of bias remarks. The goal of the film is to persuade the audience to advocate for change in the food industry. Because of this goal, the film's tone causes the reader to think negatively about the current status of industrialized food. One part of the film that stood out to me was when Joel Salatin mentioned, "...millions of Americans live in food deserts where you can't find fresh produce, you can only find processed food." I found this quote to exceptionally troubling considering I have never been faced with this horrible reality before. I have been lucky enough to live in an area where I have always had access to fresh produce. As a result, I found it both shocking and upsetting to hear that this is not the truth for all Americans. This film made me feel guilty. My opinion on this film is mixed. I believe that it was made and produced with thoughtful intentions, however, this film did leave me feeling bad about my eating habits. Perhaps that was the goal of the film? If so, this film may be potentially important for Americans to open their eyes to how they are living and treating their bodies. It is, of course, MUCH simpler for people to not consider these issues as they live their daily lives. This does not mean it is better to live this way. Obesity and hypertension are a both scary and growing epidemic in America and I think it is important for Americans to tackle these issues head-on! I think Americans need to wake up and truly start to care about their health as the industrialized food continues to influence this country everyday.
